1st anniversary of the housing accessibility and adaptability policy!

In order to offer services adapted to the needs of its clientele, the Office municipal d'habitation de Laval (OMHL) adopted, in June 2021, a Policy on the accessibility and adaptability of housing. A year later, seventeen (17) adaptations have already been carried out for investments totaling nearly $46,000.
Fourteen (14) other requests are currently being analyzed or implemented…
Manager of nearly 3,000 social and affordable housing units on the territory of Laval, the OMHL found itself short of resources, solutions and funding when faced with the great difficulties experienced by tenants and applicants looking for living environments adapted to their specific needs.
The policy therefore defines the criteria and the process for accepting and financing housing adaptation requests, as well as the guidelines specifying the various possible interventions in the current and future housing stock.
Established in June 2021, the committee made up of members of the Living Environments Department and the Technical Services and Development Department is now the one-stop shop for all requests. The committee carries out an in-depth study of the requests received based on the recommendations of health professionals and determines their eligibility based on the criteria provided for the various programs.
The entry into force of the policy and the constitution of the committee have therefore enabled the OMHL to centralize all accommodation requests and to ensure that each case is handled in a fair and equitable manner and within the prescribed time limits, thus achieve the objective of facilitating the accessibility of its housing to all types of clienteles.
Since it is also possible for an applicant to combine a request for adaptation with his request for housing, the study of his request is done in parallel, which allows, if necessary, to carry out the work even before his arrival. and thus allow a better quality of life from day one!
As of June 1, 2022, more than 80% of rental properties managed by the OMHL are accessible and more than 60% of these rental properties are partially adaptable.
For more than forty (40) years, the Office municipal d’habitation de Laval has contributed to the well-being of Laval residents by developing a supply of quality social and affordable housing in safe, inclusive, stimulating and friendly living environments.
